Contact Tracing & Menus During Lockdown

At the start of lockdown in 2020, our clients asked us for two new features. The first was a way they could accept and store contact tracing information. The second was for some form of displaying their menus and offers without using actual menus.

Our aim was to use established applications to integrate the process of collecting data and displaying their menus. Our solutions use a contact form for Contact Tracing and a QR Code for displaying menus, which made gathering customer information quick and straightforward

What Is A QR Code?

A QR Code is a Quick Response (QR) Code, a type of printed matrix barcode. These were designed for Japan's automotive industry in 1994. You can read more about them here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code

QR Codes Are Now Popular

Codes QR codes have been around for a while, but the lockdown has seen their use catapulted into everyday life. They don't look like much to the naked eye, but they're full of data when read by a computer. The cool thing is that when you use a smartphone's camera to view them, they are programmable. This means they can tell the device to carry out a task like going to a website address, perfect for menus and contact tracing.

How To Make A QR Code

There are many free QR Code generators available online, but did you know that there are two types of QR codes? They are Static QR Codes and Dynamic QR Codes. The difference between them is that Static QR Codes do not change, and Dynamic QR Codes can be changed. There are some advantages to editing a QR Code, especially if you are printing them out. Alternatively, you would have to generate a new QR Code and redistribute it.

To create a QR Code, there are lots of options and new sites all the time. Some are free and some have paid features. Here are two you can use:

Using the QR Code generator is easy. From the options along the top select URL, enter the website address of your menus or your contact tracing form. This automatically generates a QR Code that you can save.

Tip For Printing

If you are printing the QR Codes, make sure you change the printable size. To the right of the Save Icon text, there are three tiny horizontal dots. Click the little dots to display the size options. Select Custom and enter a big number like 1500 or bigger.

Quick & Simple!

Most of our clients already use a contact form on their website. We realised that this feature was the perfect solution for Contact Tracing. By creating a new form and adding this to the websites, we could quickly integrate a solution. The pictured sample form is one we use for one of our clients.

These can be easily integrated into any website, or we can host them.

I hope everyone reading this found it helpful. It's not a complicated solution, but it's one that most businesses can integrate themselves.
